About PanoPortal image About PanoPortal.com
PanoPortal.com was developed out of the desire to organize my growing collection of panoramic photos. Panorama photography has been a hobby of mine for more than a decade and has grown since the purchase of my first digital camera in 2001, which included panorama-stitching software. All of the panoramas on this web site were taken using point-and-shoot type digital cameras without a tripod. Many of the photos on PanoPortal.com are from mountain summits where traveling light and fast is much more enjoyable than lugging a tripod and heavy camera gear along.

hyperLabel image Using the "PanoPorts"
During the development of this site I have implemented a feature which I call "PanoPorts", which allows for line-of-sight linking from panorama to panorama. For example, if you are viewing the panorama from the summit of Ralston Peak and you wonder what the view from the summit of Flagpole Peak is like, just click on the Flagpole Peak label. By pointing at the Flagpole Peak label, the bearing from true north along with line-of-sight distance from Ralston Peak will be displayed. Only those peaks that have panoramas in the database will have labels that are also PanoPorts. The PanoPorts can be turned on or off so the panorama may be viewed without the clutter of labels. A quick list of available PanoPorts is displayed by pointing at the panorama title in the navigation bar.

Mapping and External Links
All of the panoramas were geotagged using various mapping software and online sources. By displaying a panorama location on the map, all of the locations that are visible from that point and have panoramas in the database are also mapped, allowing for a graphical representation of the viewshed. I have also implemented interactive exploration using Google maps and the Google Earth Plug-in. You may also download the Google Earth Placemark file that best suits your needs.

Each panorama provides external links to the free online mapping sites MyTopo, ACME, and TopoQuest, along with links to SummitPost and PeakBagger if the panorama location is available on their sites. The external links will help you find your way to these same vistas. The time and dates for each panorama are given in local time to that location. Thumbnail images have been sized at a fixed width and height to provide a clean, consistent layout. Doing this causes some slight distortion of the image in the thumbnail view, but a few of the thumbs appear very distorted. Viewing the full size image will provide an undistorted view.
